    California High Speed Rail Blog - Full Post     San Francisco Chronicle architecture columnist John King writes today of an ambitious state planning project known as Vision California. The project is intended to provide a holistic, statewide model of growth scenarios, with an emphasis on how high speed rail will change the state's growth and land use patterns. It is co-funded by the California High Speed Rail Authority.

A Menlo Park resident has sued the California High-Speed Rail Authority and Caltrain, alleging that the two cannot retrofit existing tracks for bullet trains without Union Pacific Railroad Company's permission.  Full Article

Congress has approved spending over $15 billion on high speed and intercity passenger rail service in the next five years, marking the most significant investment in passenger rail in over 75 years. Over 278 pre-applications were received from 40 states seeking nearly $100 billion in funding.

California is planning an 800 mile high speed rail system with high operating speeds that has earned the support of voters.

This system calls for incremental improvements to existing rail lines to incrementally get to operating speeds of 110 mph. Some of these lines already attain operating speeds of 95 mph.

The South Central Corridor, which some are calling the Texas “T-bone” is a three state program running from San Antonio, through Dallas and on to Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The Southeast Corridor would provide intercity rail service from Washintgon D.C. to Jacksonville but is just starting on detailed planning.

The Pacific Northwest Corridor would link Vancouver, Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland in a 466 mile Amtrak corridor.
